Behind her, the lock disengaged. The unmistakable drag of the heavy door scraping across the Berber carpet reached her ears. She held her breath for a moment and then exhaled slowly.

She clutched her hands tightly together, certain if she could see, her knuckles would be stark white. Perspiration trickled a path down between her breasts. The blindfold she’d fit securely around her head offered no light.

No thin wedge or glimpse of her surroundings.

His wordless entry gave no hint about the man standing inside the door, looking at her. Panic surged through her. Her heart pounded, and she found her mouth suddenly dry as toast. Sweet Jesus, what was she doing?

She raised her hands, prepared to rip the blindfold off, apologize profusely for wasting the poor man’s time, and flee before she made a complete fool of herself. Who would want an older woman like her? Of course, he’d think she was crazy to boot, running away like a scared little girl.

Her ex-husband’s malicious words echoed within her head. “You have nothing any man would want. Only a desperate man would even consider taking you out for dinner, never mind actually fucking you.” Her ex had stripped away every ounce of her confidence with those nasty words. In the end, divorce had been a relief and selling her house a decent price for freedom.

That memory brought every thought of escape to a crashing halt. Her panic subsided, her heart slowed to a less erratic beat. Her skin cooled and dried. She could do this. She would do this.

She lowered her hands back to her lap. The blindfold remained in place. She had no clue as to what the night held in store for her. Hopefully she’d be left with her curiosity satisfied, some fabulous ideas for her next book, and perhaps even with her body satiated, but the evening was no longer in her control.

Her date had arrived.
