Wrapping her body in an oversized towel that was surprisingly soft and fluffy, she stepped out of the bathroom and right into Logan’s arms.

“Oh!” she squealed, much to her own embarrassment.

“Oh is right,” Logan muttered huskily as he looked down at her. She hadn’t realized just how tall he was when she was wearing her work heels. Logan had to be at least six feet to her five feet five. He was stronger, more muscular than she had expected as well. The heat of his touch as he held her in his arms warmed her blood and made her knees go weak. They stood staring at each other, chemistry arcing between them for several moments before Logan suddenly stepped back. Her body chilled instantly where his warmth had been. Logan’s eyes trailed up her towel-covered body, pausing briefly at her chest that was rising and falling with her rapid breath before settling lazily on her lips. The hunger in his eyes was fleeting, so much so she wasn’t certain she had seen it at all. Heat flushed her cheeks as she realized she was only wearing a towel.

“I…I’m sorry. I didn’t expect you to be standing there,” Lucy stammered, her eyes on the floor between them.

Logan cleared his throat, his expression becoming all business. “I got worried when you didn’t answer me. I came to make sure you didn’t pass out in the shower. I still think you might have a concussion.” He reached up and gently probed the area around the wound on her head, pushing a damp strand of thick blonde hair out of the way as he did so. His touch elicited a shiver down her spine that she hoped he didn’t notice. It had to be the head wound affecting her in odd ways. Perhaps she bruised the temporal lobe, damaging her inhibitions.

“There’s a bump forming.” His voice was slightly husky again. “That’s good. If the lump comes out it won’t go in. That’s what my aunt always says.”

“And so no lump on the brain, right?” That was good news, although it shot her brain damage theory straight into the ground.

“Exactly.” He suddenly looked as uncomfortable as she felt. “How’re those ribs feeling?”

“They only hurt when I move.” The words were meant to be lighthearted but the tone of her voice belied the truth. Her ribs hurt like hell.

“I should take a look, one might be broken.”

“Oh, are you a doctor now?” Lucy hadn’t meant to sound so nasty but the words just sort of fell out of her mouth. Logan made her feel so defensive, when he wasn’t firing off every one of her nerve endings or making her blood boil in her veins, that is. Damn him. Of all the men she had be stuck with in a cabin in the woods, it had to be one that disturbed the careful balance she had worked so hard to achieve in the last year.

Logan ignored the edge to her words. Instead, he smiled. “Nope, not a doctor. Just a lot of experience with injuries. A little tape and some pain killers might do you good.”

“I suppose you might be right. I do ache all over. I just have to get dressed first.” She eyed the torn blouse and dirty skirt she had dropped on the floor. Logan caught the direction of her glance.

“If you look in the bureau you’ll find some things you can put on. They won’t fit you well but they are clean and warm. Much more comfortable than those things.” He nodded in the direction of her clothes. “Go ahead and get dressed then meet me in the other room. We’ll patch you up and then have that talk.”

So he hadn’t forgotten. She had half hoped that the sight of her in a towel would have distracted him. No such luck. Logan smiled at her and turned on his heel exiting the small room quickly. Lucy dropped down on to the edge of the bed and laid her head in her hands. She was suddenly so very exhausted. All she wanted was her own bed and some cozy flannel pajamas, neither of which were readily available.

She had to get some clothes on before Logan returned. Running into his arms practically naked had been awkward to say the least. Not that it wasn’t pleasant; she was almost ashamed at how good it actually felt. Maybe it was all the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She had nearly died twice in as many hours. Logan had been her rescuer, her protector. It was normal to feel some sort of gratification toward him, wasn’t it?

Pulling open a drawer, she found neatly folded piles of men’s pajama bottoms. No tops, just bottoms. There were several pairs in silk, a couple in satin, and the pile she liked best—flannel. They weren’t hers, but they would work. She needed warm and comforting right about then. She also needed to call Mulholland and give him a heads up on what had happened. Maybe Logan would let her borrow his cell phone.

Grabbing up a blue and green plaid pair, Lucy slipped the pants on and had to laugh at how long the legs were. It took several cuffs to get them up over the top of her foot. The pants looked ridiculous but at least she would be clothed when she saw Logan again. A long sleeved, oatmeal colored waffle-knit tee from the next drawer down covered her enough to almost hide the fact that she had no bra on. The idea of strapping herself into something so unforgiving made her body hurt almost unbearably.

Returning to the bathroom, she found a comb and ran it through her thick, tangled hair. When there was absolutely nothing else left for Lucy to do to delay the inevitable, she opened the bedroom door and stepped into the main room.

Homeland Security

By: Carolyn LaRoche

Book 2: Defenders of Love Series

clr cover 2

Fool me once… shame on me. Fool me twice?

Well, Katie has no plans to let that old saying play out in her love life. After being duped by a man who only used her to further his political agenda, Katie has no place in her life for love, for men. She can live with the broken heart, with knowing Nathan slept with her best friend. But when she’s accused of domestic terrorism, thanks to Nathan, she’s forced to accept the help of Homeland Security Agent Kaiden James. Once he gets her off the hook she’ll send him on his way and pick up the pieces of her broken life—no matter how kind, intelligent, or sinfully sexy he is.

When duty called him away from his cousin’s wedding to deal with a high profile case, Kaiden James could hardly believe his eyes. The last person he’d expected to see handcuffed to a table was the lovely nurse that had taken care of his gunshot wound last year. Memories of the sponge bath she’d given him had kept him awake more than a few nights since. Working with Katie will put his professionalism to the test.

Will Kaiden once again let duty come before love?

In another place, under other circumstances, silk, satin and lace rubbing up on him would have been a turn on. At one in the morning, in a building that smelled of dust and must, nothing got turned on except his allergy response. He needed an antihistamine and a cup of coffee in the worst way. And maybe a sandwich. Or some fried chicken. His stomach rumbled at the thought of hot, moist fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits. He had missed dinner, after all.

He caught Katie’s eye over a display of animal print push up bras. His blood warmed pleasantly as she smiled at him. A hunger of a different sort clenched in his gut.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I know it’s late but I can’t stomach the thought of anything that man touched on my skin. I want to grab a couple of things to hold me until I can get to the mall.”

“Take your time. You might not be able to go home for a few days so grab what you need,” Kaiden responded with more conviction than he felt. He nodded at a leopard print push-up in front of him. “That looks nice.” It would look real nice on Katie. Forget about his allergy response, everything started to warm up.

“Agent James! I had no idea you had such a wild side to you!”

“I’m not all business all the time you know. And please, call me Kaiden already. I am pretty sure we have gone beyond formal. Not every woman I meet gives me a sponge bath.” He winked at her as a blush formed on her cheeks.

“We probably shouldn’t discuss that. Nurse-patient privilege or something.” She reached for a deep emerald satin and lace set that would look like the jewel of the same tone against her

creamy skin and bring out the green in her hazel eyes.

“I don’t think there is any such thing. Besides, it’s something I certainly enjoy thinking about.”

He watched as the flush in her cheeks darkened by at least three shades. Kaiden couldn’t help but wonder if Nurse Katie had ever thought about him. Of course not, you idiot, she was engaged! Still, during his stay in the hospital they had definitely shared a flirtation. Apparently it ended at flirting since she had a boyfriend the entire time. The pain meds had probably colored the experience, making it something more in his mind than it had actually been.

“All right then it must be off-limits for a secret agent to discuss such things with a suspect.”

Kaiden laughed. “There is nothing secret about this agent. You know who I am and what I do and I’m fairly certain the only thing you are guilty of is bad judgment in men.”

button excerpt

The screaming hit him first. Like the backwash from a jet engine, the screams vibrated against his body. The women were packed against the edge of the stage, and as he moved out from beneath the white lights, he got a better look at the pit.

Matt had been right. The faces, the screams, the whistles, all looked and sounded the same as every other town he had been in. He had hoped this time it would be different. Why had he expected more?

Beginning his routine, he rolled his hips and occasionally made eye contact with a few of the women, searching for his orgasm girl. A small blonde, not far from the stage, caught his eye. She instantly reminded him of Al. She had the same petite figure and pink lips, but her eyes were not as sarcastic. Making a few spins, he checked out the other women, but kept coming back to the blonde.

When he pulled his silver-sequined shirt open, the motion made the pain from his broken right pinkie shoot up his arm. He kept his stage smile plastered on his face, but he could feel the sweat gathering on his upper lip. To stop thinking about the pain, he shifted his attention back to the small blonde. He pictured her being Al, watching him up on stage. Grady could almost see Al smirking at him from a table next to the stage. This was good. It was helping him get through his routine. He focused on the blonde, all the while thinking of Al, and soon he forgot about his discomfort.

Grady began to feel he was dancing only for the petite woman. He could hear the other women in the crowd shouting for him to “take it all off,” but he ignored them. He struggled getting his shirt off, and he saw the lithe blonde smile when she explored his chest with her big eyes.

Grabbing at his clothing and doing a few of the acrobatic moves he had in his dance routine almost made him see stars as the tormenting pain returned. With only his pants to go, he went to the edge of the stage, ready to bring up the blonde. When he pointed to her, as he seductively swung his hips, the blush on her cheeks almost made him laugh out loud. Al would never have blushed like that. No, Al would have scowled at him.

It took two of her friends to coax her to the stage, but when the little blonde climbed the side steps, Grady was disappointed. Up close, she was nothing like Al. Her features were plain and her mouth was bigger, her lips thicker, and her eyes were brown and not like Al’s angry grey orbs. Giving her some encouragement to have fun with him, he lifted her hands to his chest and rubbed his hips against her.

The blonde squealed, covered her face, and did all the predictable things he expected of his orgasm girl. After he had danced around her a few times, ripped off his pants—damn near cursing as the pain tore through his hand—he gave her a kiss on the cheek and showed her off the stage.

A few last struts, flashing his silver-sequined G-string, and he was done. Snapping up his clothes from the floor with his left hand, he could feel the sweat pouring off him. He quickly trotted off the stage and back behind the curtains.

Out of the view of the audience, he bent over and very gently held his sore pinkie.

“Son of a bitch,” he sighed. How was he going to survive a second show?
