Can Christina Soothe Bull’s Inner Bear?

I’d like to welcome Jane Wakely today.  Jane writes paranormal (and some contemporary) romance. Her current release is Christina’s Bear (A paranormal/shifter romance.)  Welcome Jane!

So, what drew you to this particular genre, Jane?

I love paranormal romance, and shifters are my fave! I read all genres of romance, but paranormal is my first choice when I’m looking for something new to read. It’s not surprising that most of the ideas that pop in my head have some sort of paranormal element to them! :)

(Anne)  I love shifters too.  Wolves and jungle cats are my favorite.

Have you ever considered attempting another genre?  And if so which one?

I’ve written a few contemporary romances as well. For some strange reason, sometimes the characters don’t want to be “magical!” (Weird, I know! LOL) Fantasy romance is another genre I’m interested in writing!

What do you do when you’re not writing? How do you relax?

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading! I also enjoy watching movies with TG! :)

(Anne) Sounds a lot like me, Jane.  I’ve always got a book on the go!

Okay, if you could be any character in any one of your stories or somebody else’s – who would it be and why?

I’d like to be Christina (from CHRISTINA’S BEAR) because I’d really like to meet Bull! ;)

Tell us, what’s next for you in terms of writing?

I’m working on Book 6 in the Chestnut Rock Shifters Series and when I’m done, I’ll move on to book seven. (CHRISTINA’S BEAR is Book 2!)

(Anne) Ooh, so we have a nice long series to look forward to!

What is your favorite part of this particular story, and why? (Hopefully you can tell us without giving anything away J )

My fave part of this story is the Epilogue! All I can tell you is I love a happy ending! :)

(Anne) Me too!

And now for a peek at Christina’s Bear.

Christina's Bear CoverBlurb:

Christina Mills’ loud, bubbly personality gains her numerous friends and dating opportunities. Unfortunately, being labeled a “party girl” and dating a lot can give people the wrong impression. When Christina’s dates learn the truth about her, they soon move on.

James “Bull” Johnson is a restless bear shifter ready to settle down. At the urging of his friend, he relocates to the mid-sized town of Chestnut Rock. Bull hopes the nearby forest and being near his best friend will help soothe his bear and cure some of his loneliness.

When Bull and Christina meet, he recognizes her as his mate. However, their first two encounters leave Bull thinking Christina is afraid of him and Christina is confused by her feelings toward the stranger. Both Bull and Christina have secrets and insecurities that keep them guarded, but if they can trust one another, they’ll discover they’re made for each other.

Would you care to share an excerpt with us?

Excerpt:

James “Bull” Johnson sniffed outside the cave before lumbering inside and shifting back into his human form. Because he was new to the area, he had taken a long hike through the woods, checking for danger and hiding places in case he needed them.

Matt had told him that the town of Chestnut Rock, and the connecting forest, would sooth his restless bear, but he honestly hadn’t known what to think. With nothing to lose and very few belongings, he’d packed up his tiny apartment and moved to the mid-sized town.

Matt and Bull had met in college and when they quickly recognized the other as a shifter, they’d formed an unbreakable bond. After college, they each went their own way, traveling and exploring the country. They’d met up once or twice a year until Matt put down roots in Chestnut Rock. Bull had continued to look until he decided he didn’t want to look anymore. He was tired and he wanted a permanent place to call home. Matt constantly raved about his home and convinced Bull to make it his home, too.

Bull pulled his shirt, jeans and flip-flops out of the crevice in the cave wall where he’d stored them earlier. Being a bear shifter meant he needed to take precautions when he allowed himself to shift. If a wolf, bunny or deer was spotted near the hotel, most likely not much would happen. The wolf would be mistaken for a dog and the bunny and deer would charm people with their cuteness. A bear, however, brought a much different reaction—usually involving screaming and the loading of shotgun barrels.

Over time he’d learned to take safeguards against those types of situations.

Her quest starts her on a journey from the human world to Odin’s Valhalla and back again.

Victoria will find salvation or face destruction beneath the Hunger Moon

Congratulations on your new release, Melissa!

Tell us a little about yourself.  How did you start writing?

Hi! I’m a stay at home, mother of three children, and author. Before I had my daughter, I was a claims adjuster with a major auto insurance company. (Hint: “You’re in good hands.”) I have a B.S. in Business from Arizona State University, and I’ve worked professionally at a documentation specialist for medical device companies and a technical writer for software engineering.

Before I started writing, I’d been a voracious reader for years. I dabbled in writing off and on through the years, experimenting in various genres. I’ve always wanted to tell my own stories so I eventually made the natural evolution to fiction.

What drew you to this particular genre?

I love fantasy stories of all types so it was a natural fit. I’ve read all of the Laura K. Hamilton’s early Anita Blake books, Karen Roberson’s Sword Dancer books, Charlaine Harris’ books, Steven Brust, Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs… To name a few.

Have you ever considered another genre?  And if so which one?

Yes, I also write romance novels and I’ve considered trying my hand at a detective series. I dabble in humor writing on my blog, although it’s more accurate to say that I observe and report on human nature.

(Anne) I’ve read your blog – and LOVE it!

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or…?

I sit down and start writing. I usually know the beginning, middle and end in my head. Some plot points may be fuzzy but I never work from a whole story outline. At most, I might write a chapter outline but for the most part I fly by the seat of my pants.

What did you learn from writing your first book?

Egads. More than I can possibly recount. I’d say my most valuable lessons for the first novel had to do with maintaining an active voice. Very early on, I tended to slide into passive voice so it took some retraining to unlearn those bad habits. I also learned quite a bit about staying in the character’s point of view. Head hopping was also another one of my early foibles.

How many hours a day to you spend writing? Do you have a routine?

Approximately two hours a day. I’m lucky if I can manage more than that. I also spend time maintaining my blog, answering emails, managing my website. Editing eats up another good chunk of my time.

(Anne) I know what you mean. There’s never enough hours in the day.

If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what would it be?

Slay those adverbs. To misquote Steven King: the road to hell is paved in ly-adverbs.

What’s next for you in terms of writing?

I’m working on the next novel in my Norse Werewolves Urban Fantasy series. The second Victoria Storm novel called “Battle Cry”.

Would you share an excerpt with us?

Victoria felt him before she saw him. His power washed over her with the force of an incoming tide, as dark, mysterious and unstoppable as the ocean. Her wolf rose to answer his instinctive response, defiant and determined. She challenged his power and altered the irresistible flow so it passed around rather than over her. Before she reached the office entrance, the male werewolf responded to her presence and surged to his feet. He rounded the desk, demonstrating extraordinary grace and strength, and she braced for a physical confrontation. He dwarfed her in both height and weight.

As soon as their gazes met, they locked in a dominance contest. His narrowed eyes pierced hers; the light-pigmented brown irises were the color of honey and eclipsed the whites and round black pupils. Wolf eyes.

Victoria did not approach with her head low or avert her gaze. Instead, she challenged him outright, radiating defiance, posture stiff and erect. While they faced off, she regretted the tactical error, but it was too late to rescind. Her stubborn pride permitted no retreat, and it went against her nature to submit.

“Let’s take this outside where there are no humans to bear witness,” he said in a deep, resonant voice she found appealing.

Aroused, her wolf took an immediate interest in him as a fine, fit male animal. For the first time, Victoria noticed his physical appearance, and her wolf found him more than acceptable. She estimated his age as being in his late thirties. He in no way suffered for the smattering of silver hairs that peppered his dark head. He was a perfect specimen of a man.

Distracted, Victoria broke eye contact, but not to submit. She ran her gaze over his body with blatant approval, lingering on his broad shoulders and chest, muscular arms and legs. He wore a tailored navy suit with a light shirt and dark blue tie. From the way his clothing fit, there was not an ounce of spare fat anywhere on him.

His features possessed splendid symmetry, though a silver scar on his right cheek marred his perfection. The shape of his brow, nose, and lower face hinted at a distant Roman heritage. High cheekbones alluded to his Nordic blood. He cleared his throat, and Victoria scented both his arousal and amusement.

“Did you come to challenge me, or do you have something else in mind?”

His devilish smile hinted at a sense of humor, and Victoria seized on the opening. A ballsy gamble carried inherent risk, but her initial inept blundering had left her with no other graceful out. Her eyes rose to meet his once again.

“I am Victoria, daughter of Adair and Katherine, High Priestess of Freya, Lady Valkyrie, shaman, and healer,” she said, making her boast. “I am also the Alpha of my pack, and I am seeking a mate. I have come to assess whether you would make an acceptable suitor.”

“You’re kidding.” He registered surprise and disbelief.

Victoria arched her brow. “I am not.”

MelissaSnarkAuthor BIO

A friend asked me once how I chose my pen name. I told her the following: “Melissa, because when people mix up my first name, it’s the most common goof up. Snark, because it amuses me. A) I love the word ‘snarky’ and B) I love Lewis Carroll.”

“For the snark was a boojum, you see.”–Lewis Carroll

As an individual, I’m sarcastic, stubborn and blunt to a fault. I have a strange sense of humor and I like to laugh (usually at my husband or children), but also at myself. I’m not particularly extroverted, although I do enjoy time with my family and close friends a great deal.

At the moment, I’m a stay at home mom who writes in my spare time. I’ve got a B.S. from Arizona State University in Business, and I’ve worked a variety of different jobs, including as a medical device documentation specialist, a technical writer, and an auto liability adjuster.

I live in the San Francisco East Bay of Northern California with my husband, three kids, and three cats. My hobbies include roleplaying, cooking and reading.

Author Spotlight: Joan Conning Afman

Joan Conning Afman is here today, talking about her latest release, which, comes out today.  Welcome Joan.

Hello, everybody. It is my pleasure to be able to chat with you today, and to tell you about my newest novel, “Sacrifice at Mystery Hill.”

I just love mysterious places, like Stonehenge, the Orkneys, the Mayan ruins, etc. In southern New Hampshire, outside the small town of East Berlin is an ancient site known as Mystery Hill. It is a labyrinth of small buildings, tunnels, storage places, worship sites, and even an altar with carved grooves around the edges, and a stone pit to catch the—liquid that flowed from the stone. Wine or blood–who knows? Archaeologists know that Mystery Hill is over 2000 years old…but who built it and why? The first thought is Native American Indians, of course–but they didn’t build in stone. It might have been Vikings, or even Phoenicians, but nobody knows for sure.

My daughter and I took the grandchildren for a day trip there. Of course, Christopher and Alyssa had fun running around and jumping on the rocks, but I was more fascinated by what story I might write about it. When we got back to the gift shop, I picked up a book. “America’s Stonehenge”, by David Goudsward. This was fascinating–facts and legends about what had happened there–or might have happened there. All sorts of spooky stuff, screams in the night, visions, voices and sounds that came from nowhere…

Okay! Perfect site for a paranormal story.

SacrificeAtMysteryHill-WEB96Thomas and Chloe are lovers from an ancient time, and meet in the present as two college students, and feel an instant attraction. As the pair gets involved in faux Druid secret club off campus, Thomas begins to feel a powerful need to protect Chloe, not able to remember when he failed to protect her eons ago.

Dyfan, the Druid leader, who has strange psychic abilities, soon makes his intentions clear, as he re-names Chloe “Vala”, which means an acceptable sacrifice. As Thomas and Chloe become more entangled in the Druid group, their unlikely help comes from Chloes’ perceptive art professor, Jim Walsh, and Thomas’ quirky, margarita-making grandmother, Ivy, who always seems to know more than she should.

The breath-holding climax takes place at Mystery Hill, where human sacrifices have happened before.

Sacrifice at Mystery Hill comes out May 1, and will be available in both digital and print options. You can order it from Amazon.com, or–a little later, from Barnes and Noble Nook store, or from www.wingsepress.com directly.

And if you do read it and like it–please leave me a review on Amazon.com!

Paranormal and Fantasy Confusion by Gemma Juliana

This week, Gemma Juliana  has been visiting with me. On Monday she shared a fabulous Middle Eastern recipe with us. On Wednesday she chatted with me and we got to know a little more about her, and on each day she has showcased one of her current releases.

Gemma is back today and she’s talking about the difference between paranormal and fantasy.

I’ve always been curious about the perceived difference between paranormal and fantasy in the world of books.

As a reader I’ve wondered why the majority of books in the paranormal section of a bookstore focus on vampires and werewolves, with a sprinkling of other themes like an occasional fallen angel or gargoyle.

As an indie author I ran into a problem labeling my novella, Christmas Spirits. My goal was ‘paranormal ghost romance’ because it describes the book.

Christmas SpiritsAnna, a beautiful sheikh’s wife, dies too young. She fulfills her promise to return every Christmas Eve to be with her beloved husband, until now. This is the last time she may return, so she begs him to leave with her. There is no evil third party. The problem they must solve is unusual, as the end of the story reveals. There is no horror, no darkness in this love story, except that she reveals she was murdered as revenge for an ancient wrong that took place within their family.

According to what people search for in paranormal, my book wouldn’t find an audience there. I found a ghost listing that would make it horror, but it isn’t horror. It’s a love story. It seemed to fit best into fantasy, so that’s where Christmas Spirits can be found.

For me, the concept of a vampire wanting to drink my blood, a werewolf baring his fangs as he approaches, and anything a zombie might want to try, is sheer horror. Yes, it’s paranormal too, but why isn’t a fairy who practices white magic? Maybe sometimes it is…

If I want to read about fairies, wizards, magic, curses and spells, mythical gods and goddesses, I usually need to head to the fantasy romance section.

The only cross-over themes in both worlds seem to be angels, witches and ghosts. Time travel is found in both. Good witch – fantasy. Bad witch – paranormal.

How did this split come about? It was probably devised by publishers in an attempt to create genres for the books they sell, but it’s not accurate. It looks like they decided whatever is dark is paranormal, and whatever is light, bright or magic-related is fantasy.

As an astrologer, tarot and rune reader, I know that all of the above is paranormal. Many people consider it all ‘real’ while others consider it all ‘fantasy’.

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, ‘paranormal’ means: Not scientifically explainable. Supernatural. It does not indicate paranormal is synonymous with darkness.

It goes on to describe ‘fantasy’ as being imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters.

Christmas Spirits has neither strange settings nor grotesque characters. But in the strange world of fiction, it is a fantasy romance.

I’m not trying to change book classifications by bringing this up. I just want to point out that the word paranormal means a whole lot more than you’ll find in that genre on bookshelves… and that I’ve been confused by all this for a long time. Is it just me?

Have you ever wondered about the difference between paranormal and fantasy books? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Guest Katya Armock

It’s been a few weeks since I shared a recipe, so today author Katya  Armock is joining me to share one of her favorites and to tell us about her latest release from Etopia PressTo Hiss or to Kiss.

Thanks for hosting me, Anne.

Today, I’m going to share a recipe. My main characters, Chloe and Jorge, share a love a Scotch. My husband and I also enjoy the beverage and a general love for Scotland in general. For his birthday this year, we hosted a party with foods similar to what one would have at a Burns Night party (for more information about the yearly celebrations of Robert Burns, go here). That means we served haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes), and cranachan ( a dessert featuring Scotch).

She’ll never get an invitation from her nemesis—unless she finds a way to get one herself. And breaking into his house is nothing if it means getting the scoop. But what she gets instead is an eye-full of the man himself, half-naked and more than she’d ever dreamed he could be in all her teenage fantasies.

Drex has been fantasizing about Chris forever, and now that she’s a grown woman, he still has a hard time treating her like one. So when she shows up at the Seduction Party—on the auction chair!—he’s got no other choice but to teach that nosey woman a lesson. He never dreamed sex could be like this, with Chris in his room, tied to a bed, asking him for stuff that blows his mind…

Guest: Antonia van Zandt

My treat for you today is fellow Etopian, Antonia van Zandt. In honor of her latest release Vienna Valentine she’s sharing with us a little history on Vienna.

Vienna – Capital of Romance

Emperor Franz JosefFor some, it has to be Paris. For others, the eternal city of Rome. But, for me, one city towers head and shoulders above all others when it comes to the Capital of Romance – Vienna.

Vienna used to be the capital of a great Dual Monarchy – the Austro-Hungarian empire – and, in the second half of the nineteenth century, its ruler, Franz Josef, decided he would transform the cramped streets of the city into the most magnificent capital in Europe. To do this, he undertook a massive building project which included gutting the inner city and constructing the elegant Ring, framed by majestic buildings built in classical Grecian style.Vienna at night

World War I saw the destruction of the empire and the break-up of its territory. A much smaller republic of Austria emerged, but still with its opulent capital. Despite heavy bombing in Word War II, a massive restoration programme saw the rebuilding of the Ring and now, today, the city of Strauss and Klimt weaves its magic for anyone with romance in their heart.

The Viennese enjoy the finer things of life, anBlaue Bar, Hotel Sacherd music, art and diverse cultural activities abound. Enjoy a romantic dinner for two in the elegant Grand Café, within the Grand Hotel on Kärntnerring, followed by Swan Lake at the Opera House just up the road. Then, late night drinks in the Hotel Sacher – topped off with a slice of their famous chocolate cake. Wander through the streets and stroll along the banks of the Donaukanal. On a warm summer evening, just a gentle breeze will ruffle your hair. Magical.

By day, hop onto the tram and circumnavigate the Ring, stopping off whenever you see a beautiful building that takes your fancy. You can spend all day doing this! There is so much to see and fascinate. Or maybe you’d prefer to see Franz Josef’s masterpiece from a horse drawn carriage. You can pick up a Fiaker near the cathedral.

VolksgartenHold hands, walk along leafy roads and through peaceful parks (try the Volksgarten, near the Hofburg, which houses a lovely statue of Empress Elisabeth – Franz Josef’s beloved and tragic wife). In Vienna, it’s surprisingly easy to escape the hustle and bustle of the streets. Don’t miss it!

Now I’ve got you in the mood, let’s heat things up a bit. Here’s a taste of Vienna Valentine:
