A Change in Tide by Freya Barker

Friday, May 5th, 2017

Everybody loves to relate to the book they are reading. And I’m no exception, especially when I can relate to the world the story is created in.

I recently read a book by a Canadian author set in a Canadian location and the characters are, you guessed it, Canadian. This may not seem like much, but it actually is to us Canadian authors.  Because our selling market is primarily the USA, we tend to write to that market. That means changing locations, changing character traits and anecdotes, hell even changing our spelling! (Can I just say I’m constantly getting caught at the day job for ‘typos’ because I forget and write the American version of words 🙂 ).

Anyway, on my way north for a family wedding, I happened to read Freya Barker’s brand new release A Change in Tide (Northern Lights Book 1)

Here’s the Blurb…

What impact would it have when everything suddenly faded to black?

For Mia, a crowded subway ride changes her entire life. Retreating to the wilderness helps her cope with a world that is suddenly too loud, too turbulent.
Her existence safely contained to the small cottage on the lake, she is unprepared for the neighbor that moves across the bay

A career-ending injury has Jared permanently benched. His reputation as The Enforcer won’t survive the unanticipated responsibilities awaiting him.
Away from the public eye, he adjust to his new reality, under the quiet observation of the intriguing hermit on the other side of the water.

I LOVED this story and am not ashamed to say that while I should have been working on my own (rather late) story, I was reading hers.  It was compelling. It was personal. It was sweet and it was sexy. It covered some complex issues. Each character had their own story with their own hardships to struggle through. They all had flaws, nobody was perfect. They screwed up. They had vulnerable moments. They apologized. They moved towards that happily ever after.

The main characters, Mia and Jared, are likable and believable, as are the supporting cast. They made me smile. They made me laugh. They made me hurt for them. They made me root for them. They each felt broken and lost in their lives, yet regardless of their personal insecurities, they managed to find their way to each other. Their chemistry is a slow burn that finally erupts. And boy am I glad I was there to see it. I particularly enjoyed the insight they had into each other’s comfort zone, or lack thereof, and how they pushed the boundaries in a safe and secure way until the other person experienced something new and a bit scary, but better than anticipated.

While I do tend to read books higher on the heat level and on the erotic level, I absolutely love settling in for a good love story. And that’s exactly what I found in this book. This story is beautifully written and was a pleasure to read.

Admittedly this was the first book I’ve read by Ms. Barker. But I can tell you, it will not be the last. If you haven’t tested these northern shores yet, I highly recommend starting with A Change in Tide.

Synopsis

Raine Kendall has been in love with her boss, Macen Hammerman, for years. Determined to make the man notice that she’s a grown woman with desires and needs, she pours out her heart and offers her body to him—only to be crushingly rejected. But when his friend, very single, very sexy Liam O’Neill watches the other Dom refuse to act on his obvious feelings for Raine, he resolves to step in and do whatever it takes to help Hammer find happiness again, even rousing his friend’s possessive instincts by making the girl a proposition too tempting to refuse. But he never imagines that he’ll end up falling for her himself.

Hammer has buried his lust for Raine for years. After rescuing the budding runaway from an alley behind his exclusive BDSM Dungeon, he has come to covet the pretty submissive. But tragedy has taught him that he can never be what she needs. So he watches over her while struggling to keep his distance. Liam’s crafty plan blindsides Hammer, especially when he sees how determined his friend is to possess Raine for his own. Hammer isn’t ready to give the lovely submissive over to any other Dom, but can he heal from his past and fight for her? Or will he lose Raine if she truly gives herself—heart, body, and soul—to Liam?

ISABELLA LAPEARL

My name is Isabella and I am a new Author of Erotic Fiction. I have recently published two short stories, one a stand-alone “Connexions” and the other is the first book in a series called The Quickening and is entitled “Scandalous.” The next two in the series, will be coming out in 2013 and are called “Momentum” and “Geminus” respectively.

December 4th 2012 was a WOW day of biblical proportions for me personally. My first novel was published, entitled “One Dom to Love” co-written by Best Selling New York Times Author, Shayla Black and by Author Jenna Jacob. I can’t even begin to express how privileged and thrilled I was to work with both these wonderful, incredible women, and how proud I am to call them friends. “One Dom to Love” is the first book in The Doms of her Life series and for those chomping at the bit already after finishing this book, you’ll be delighted to know that Book 2 is currently being written.

One submissive. Two Doms. A very complex relationship. Nothing comes easy in this story. One Dom to Love invokes some strong emotions, both for the characters and the reader. The relationship between Hammer, Raine and Liam is complicated and absolutely volatile at times. Hammer acts like an ass most of the time, so readers will either love or hate him. I personally love him. Deep down he’s scared of losing her so he acts out. I get this about him. Liam appears to be the calmer of the two, certainly the more level headed of them. But he’s the one with the agenda, so I still can’t decide if I like Liam or not. Part of me doesn’t trust him. Both are deeply in love with her and appear to be truly concerned for her welfare, though they take it a bit far at times which frustrates the hell out of her. Raine is simply confused and needs to decide what she wants out of life. She also has some major trust issues and maybe needs time to mature a little before she can truly take on a pair of men such as Hammer and Liam.

The authors have created three characters, and each comes with some deep emotional conflict and issues to deal with. Individually they each have to find a way to deal with their internal pain, their personal issues, past hurts as well as confusion over the current situation they find themselves in. Together they are combustible—whether it be when making love or fighting.  I couldn’t decide who to root for because, honestly, I want them all to win. I love BDSM and Ménage stories. I’ve read Ms. Black’s work before, and love it. This was my first instruction to the other authors. Personally, I’m hoping books 2 and 3 have more interaction around the club Hammer owns.

Be forewarned, this is book 1 of 3 and you really need to read them in order. Also it ends on a cliffhanger. But I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. If you’re looking for angst – this book definitely has it. If you looking for hot sex – this book definitely has it. If you’re looking for emotional drama, turmoil, conflict and wounded or flawed characters – this book most definitely has it.  All this and more. It keeps you guessing. And even if you’re angry with the characters at the time, you continue to turn the page. I give One Dom to Love 4 stars. Now I’ll get back to reading book 2 in this series, Young and Submissive.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review by the authors.

“I dare you” Words that would change an adrenaline junkie

Blurb:

“I dare you.”

Those words would change adrenaline junkie, Alice Harrison’s life forever. She’s a party girl that doesn’t believe in love until she meets a man that only writes about it.

Seth James escaped his overbearing father and moved into one of the James family’s vacant condos, hoping to create the music he loves in peace. But the fragile calm he’s envisioned shatters when a tiny woman with a world full of energy bounces out of the elevator and nearly takes him out.

With the patience of a saint, Seth seeks the dark that keeps Alice from enjoying life. He challenges her to exorcise the demons in her past in order to discover the true meaning of love. But when the walls fall down, the hidden deceptions will bare the ugly truth about a woman drowning in sorrow and a man who may not know how to be her hero.

My Review of Drowning

You have to read this story. Just do it.

The story of Seth and Alice draws the reader in right from the beginning. I applaud the author for this and I love the fact that she gave us both points of view.  I often feel like I’m missing something when I only get to see inside one character’s head.  In Drowning, both Seth and Alice have suffered in different ways, and yet they are inexplicably drawn to each other because of their pasts.  For two so young, they are incredibly mature.  Circumstances, sad that they were, forced them to fast forward through their childhoods.  Now, as young adults, they feel the need to comfort each other as well as to draw comfort from each other, but they’re not quite sure how to do it.  They keep screwing up. They want to fix each other, but don’t want to fix themselves, or rather; they feel they are so broken they can no longer be fixed.

The story of Seth and Alice is dark, it’s light, it’s heartbreaking, and it’s utterly fantastic.  Their pain is palpable. Their capacity to love is overwhelming. They don’t want to admit they need to love each other.  They’re more comfortable fixing other people then fixing themselves.  But they’re not broken.  Damaged, yes. Hurting, most definitely. Not worth saving? Not. On. Your. Life. Or in this case, theirs. They just need people in their corner.  They need to trust.

I smiled. I cursed. Not at them, but at their circumstances. I cheered for them. I cried for them. I felt their pain. I felt their heartbreak. I felt their loneliness and it utterly broke my heart.  Their story is a one step forward, two steps back kind of thing.  Until they finally leap, rather than step.

I highly recommend this story. There’s a couple of lessons here too. First, nobody’s perfect, we all have things we don’t like about ourselves, perhaps secrets to hide. That doesn’t mean we’re not worthy of love. And second, no matter how dire it may seem, there’s always, always somebody there ready to hold your hand, to keep your head above water, to keep you from going under.

Read the story of Seth and Alice. You know you want to. Just do it.  I dare you.

PlayList

Excerpt

He laughs that loud laugh that cuts down into my stomach and vibrates my breakfast to the surface. “Of course. I haven’t seen you in quite some time and thought I’d pay my baby daughter a visit. Did you get my letter?”

I can’t help the tremble that takes root in my chin and bleeds up into my tear ducts. I fight the well of salt water. Seth was right. They were a weakness to him, and he’d feed on them. “You need to go.”

“I’ll go when I’m ready. I think you should remember whose roof you’re living under and be more gracious.”

The door across the hall opens, and I meet Seth James’ bold stare over my father’s shoulder. God no. Please, don’t watch this.

He leaves the door open and steps closer. “Everything okay?”

My father lurches back and clears his throat. “Everything’s fine.” He spins and thrust out his hand, all politician’s smiles and his kissing baby’s grin on his face. “E. Harrison, and you are?”

“Neighbor. Seth James.”

I grip my towel tighter, but Seth’s eyes never stray from Dad’s. He was so wrong about being a hero. He’d just saved me from pure evil. The two men stand taller. My father is forbidding in his expensive threads. He has years of cut muscles beneath that have kept him from sagging like most men his age. Seth, on the other hand, has youth on his side. He’s all hard ridges and full of territorial male dominance.

With a deep sigh that relaxes all those tightened nerves, I ask, “Father, did you need something?”

“I came by to speak to you about something, but, perhaps another time would be better suited.” He glances back at me and sneers, but returns to sleazy smiles before he gives a nod to Seth. “Mr. James, a pleasure. I’ll be on my way.”

Seth puts a hand out and catches my father’s shoulder. “Mr. Harrison, as the owner of this condo, I feel that I should warn you against making my tenants uncomfortable.” Seth steps across the hall and drops an arm around my scarred shoulder. His thumb soothes away the shiver chasing over my collar bone. “I’m not sure of your welcome here, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t want to see either of these girls come to harm.”

I gasp. He spoke so eloquently. Bold and rich. I’d have never thought he had it in him if I hadn’t just witnessed it. And no one has ever come to my defense. Never. Seth James was ten feet tall and made of blue bubble gum right now. I’d chew him, blow him, and make him pop. Vulgar, I know, but there it is.

My father straightens his jacket. “Do you know who I am?”

“I do, but obviously you do not know who I am or what I’m capable of.” Seth tucks me even closer. If he’s noticed the scars stretching across my shoulders, he’s too polite to even give them a second glance, and for that, I’ll forever be indebted to him. “Don’t fuck with Alice again.”

He knows my name. And he just cussed my dad.

Harrison squints at us, and turns, clicking his heels together before stalking to the elevator. As much as I love seeing someone put him in his place, Seth James had just built me a coffin.

Fucking great. As soon as the sliding doors close on Dad, I shove Seth away from me. He’s too much right now. Everything is too much.

His brow wrinkles. “What?”

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

He steps back and glances at the floor before smirking up at me. “Being your hero.”

Symphony of Light and Winter is not your normal paranormal

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

I read this FANTASTIC book the other day, and then I just had to let the author know what I thought about it… that I fucking loved it. And yes, that is exactly what I told her. 🙂

I am a big fan of erotic romance (obviously). I also like some paranormal. Normally however, I gravitate to animal shifter stories.  Frankly, I tend to stay away from werewolves and vampire, angels and demons, and gods or otherworldly types of things. It’s not that I don’t like those themes, but I simply prefer to watch them on television or in movies rather than read about them. Not sure why, but there you have it.

A few days ago, I downloaded my reads in advance of my summer vacation. I’m one of the authors participating in the Vacation Crashers Photo Contest with fellow Etopia Press author Renea Mason, so her new book—Symphony of Light and Winter—was added to my vacation TBR pile. Knowing it might not be the type of story I generally read, it still intrigued me, so much so that I decided not to wait until I was on the plane.   Let me simply say…OMG.

Symphony of Light and Winter is not your normal paranormal. It is such an utterly fantastic blend of non-vampire, non-angel, non-demon, non-god stuff that it truly drew me in from page one and kept me reading (to the exclusion of everything else).

I don’t know what it was exactly—perhaps it was because all of those things were hinted at, providing glimpses of each, but there wasn’t an overwhelming focus on any given one. Perhaps it was the easy banter back and forth between Linden (the heroine, and she truly is) and Cyril (the hero who will do anything, and I mean the ultimate, to save the woman he loves).  Maybe that’s what did it for me.  Maybe it was the sexy best friend, or the sexual hunger coming off the entire crew in waves, as well as the deep emotional and sense of familial ties that connected all of them, making them a cohesive unit regardless of whatever else was going on in their lives. Even when Linden was cursing Cyril I could feel the love boiling underneath her frustration and anger.  I could sense his pain and guilt.

Quite simply, it was wonderfully written.  I will not give away any spoilers. I just highly recommend you read this story. You will fall for these characters in all ways imaginable. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I felt compassion.  The story is told in Linden’s POV only, but Ms. Mason still managed to convey Cyril’s thoughts and emotions through his words, his actions and his non-actions.

I can honestly say I am most eagerly awaiting the next installment of this series.  Please tell me we won’t have to wait too long!

I am a fan.

Symphony of Light and Winter

from Etopia Press-released June 21st, 2013

One woman. Seven men. All bound by one man’s undying devotion.

S of L and W coverFundraiser Linden Hill has a knack for reading people. She always knows which conversations will put a prospect at ease, which drink will loosen a patron’s lips—or his wallet, and how cleavage will make a donor sweeten the deal. She’s even foreseen her dateless weekends four hundred and sixty-four times in a row.

But ten years after watching life drain from her former mentor’s and first love’s eyes, her skills for divining the predictable are lost. When Cyril returns, he’s still gorgeous, but this time he’s beyond human, far less dead, and pissed. His lack of memory drives him to desperate acts, and his turbulent re-acquaintance with Linden pulls her into his war with a creature hell-bent on his destruction. His group of six supernatural men share a tantalizing secret, but despite the hunger, it’s love that leads her to sacrifice everything to save him…

Here is an excerpt to wet your appetite:

My amusement was interrupted by the absolute last thing I needed. Cyril. As if being in a room with a bunch of men who wanted me but didn’t know why and hated me for it wasn’t bad enough. In his black custom suit, he radiated power. He pulled at his cuff links as he stopped to survey the room.

Instead of trying to make my escape, I seized an opportunity to antagonize him. I was really starting to enjoy tormenting him.

“Good morning, Grim, it is nice of you to join us.”

“Grim. Ha! She called him Grim.” Rhys clapped his hands as he laughed.

Cyril didn’t acknowledge me or Rhys’s comment. He stood there for a very long time and looked around the room at each man. Nobody met his gaze but me. Cyril’s fists clenched at his side, jaw tight, and face furious.

“I warned all of you,” he addressed the room. He didn’t growl but rather wrapped his words with a subtle menace.

“Leave them alone. You know this is entirely your fault. If you would just think things through, you’d stop fucking everything up. I do have to say, of all your fuckups, this one is certainly the most impressive and entertaining from my perspective.” I winked at Overton, who managed to glare at me even with his head practically bowed. Why were they so fucking subservient to him?

The next thing I knew, I was yanked from my seat and hoisted onto the counter. Cyril grabbed my ass and pulled me to the edge, forced my legs open, and stepped between them. He wrapped his arms around me and placed his head against mine. It wasn’t his voice I heard but rather his mind. It felt like when I talked to myself but somehow I knew it was him. Strange, he had tone and inflection while communicating.

“You need to stop showing off in front of my men. Yes, I fucked up, but do you really want them to give in to their urges? Do you think you can fend them off? I could toss you to them and see how far you get. Is that what you want? Maybe I should let them have their way with you and pull up a chair to watch. I want you to think about something before you start to defy me. I’m the only one who can keep you safe. So it’s best you stop being a smart-ass for five seconds and listen to me. I’m going to do something that will piss you off. I’m warning you now it’s for your own good. You need to go along with it, no matter how angry you are at me. Don’t fight me. I’ll try to fix this but until then, I need to take a few precautions.”

I wasn’t sure how to respond. If I thought something, could he hear me? Was this two-way communication? I tried to push him away.

He tightened his grip and his voice was in my head again.

“Stop it! Let me remind you that I have a special connection with these men. Not only can I read their thoughts but I can’t block them. I don’t have to try to receive them. I know exactly what each person in this room, besides you of course, is thinking right now.”

So that’s what Overton meant when he said Cyril had ways of finding out.

“The thoughts that assaulted me when I entered this room would make a porn star blush; every one of their little fantasies featured you.”

I giggled.

The voice growled. “Don’t laugh. I won’t pretend I’m not jealous and angry. I am. But if you knew the things they were thinking you’d better understand why I need to do what I’m about to do. Do you see Dominic over there? Let’s just say his tastes run a little dark. Ever spend considerable time naked with your hands bound behind your back and a ball gag in your mouth? He’s picturing you that way, this very instant.”

I stiffened. That didn’t at all appeal to me.

“Thor seems to think that you’d enjoy all of us taking you at the same time.”

And he seemed so quiet and sweet.

“Sinclair wants to shove his cock down your throat until you choke, all the while telling you how it’s your entire fault. Rhys is thinking of how you would look sprawled out on the hood of his new sports car, and Overton…”

“NO!” I yelled.

It seemed like a violation of privacy with Overton. Unlike the others, I considered him a friend. I respected him too much.

“See, like it or not, I’m going to tell you what he’s thinking since it pisses me off the most. He thinks I’m going to fuck you right here on this counter, to lay my claim. Once he gets past the fantasies of watching me fuck you, which he finds exceptionally arousing…”

There was a momentary pause to the voice and when he started again, he was angry.

“He then knocks on your bedroom door after you run crying from the room. You invite him in and he holds you in his arms while you cry about how I violated and humiliated you. He wants to comfort you. He wants to be your savior. He wants to save you from me. But he knows he can’t.”

I felt the moment he left my head, because a sudden wave of dizziness came over me.

With no more words, he tilted his head and placed his lips against mine. I fought the rigidity that tried to seize my body. I knew it was best to give in. I wouldn’t fight him, but I knew every time he got close, I ran the risk of losing myself. I was still way too angry to just give up.

His lips danced with mine as he nestled himself between my open thighs.

Was Overton right? How far would he take it? If it did go too far, would I be able to stop him? He was such a fucking weakness for me I honestly didn’t think I would.

He was gentle and softly stroked my back as his tongue made love to my mouth. With one hand he cupped my ass and pulled me flush against him, and with the other he reached up, cupped my breast, and squeezed hard. His kiss grew frantic and I became caught up in the sensation, forgot where I was, and that I had an audience. He pushed me hard against his erection as he rubbed himself rhythmically against my core. “You are mine. You belong to me. Now say it! Let them all know who you belong to.”

Was he kidding? I hesitated.

He ran his fangs up the side of my neck in warning. He whispered in my ear, “Say it. You need to say it. Let them hear it come from your lips.” His hand drifted from my breast to the hem of my nightgown and pulled up one side so it rested in the crease where my leg met my hip.

Somehow the part of me that knew he was right surfaced, and the stubborn part of me took a momentary vacation. If I was his, they wouldn’t dare defy him. It would keep me safe.

His fingers toyed with the edge of my panties before tugging the fabric to the side to allow him to stroke my moist skin. He positioned himself at the juncture between my legs, allowing my naked flesh to gather friction from his cloth-covered cock.

“Yes, Cyril, I’m yours.”

With that, he struck. His fangs pierced my neck. The second of pain from his bite passed and the pleasure grew, igniting my veins with liquid desire. One arm tightened around me, pulling me harder against his cock. The other held my head while he sucked harder. Each pull he took was linked to the sensitive place between my legs. He ground his hips into mine and I moaned. The first wave of climax hit, tensing muscles and pushing my breath out in a rush. This was new. He could do this just by biting me?

I shook in his arms as he drank. Tremor after tremor seized me as he took his fill. I was so caught up in the sensation I only vaguely noticed the moans and growls that escaped from behind his teeth. With one final pull, and a thrust of his hips, he finished with a crushing embrace as he removed his teeth from my neck.

“Mine!” he roared. He enveloped me in his arms and held me close. He dipped his head to lick closed the small punctures on my throat.

I threw my head back. My breathing slowed as the cloud that had invaded my head receded.

Son of a bitch! I just came in front of everyone while sitting on the kitchen counter!

I was afraid to open my eyes but when I did, he stared back.

He nuzzled my cheek. “I’m sorry. I only want to protect you. If you’re mine, no one will dare touch you. I needed to lay my claim but I didn’t want to take anything you hadn’t already offered. Since you’ve replenished me before I thought this might be more acceptable.”

I was angrier with myself than him.

He caressed my arms and back. When I mustered enough courage to look around, we were the only
people in the kitchen, with the exception of Overton, who stood in the doorway holding the keys to my car.

Cyril softly lifted my chin so that my eyes would meet his. “Again, I’m sorry. I know I end up saying that far too often. But I need you to know, hearing those words from your lips…ah, hell. I can’t even explain it. Perhaps someday, you’ll utter them in truth.”

He placed his forehead against mine, took a deep breath. “Fuck. Maybe Overton is right. Maybe someone should save you from me.”

Personal Review: Rush – By Maya Banks

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

Today I’ve decided to share a book I just finished this morning, Rush by Maya BanksRush is Book 1 in her Breathless Trilogy.  Here’s the back blurb:

rush_450When Gabe Hamilton saw Mia Crestwell walk into the ballroom for his hotel’s grand opening, he knew he was going to hell for what he had planned. After all, Mia is his best friend’s litter sister. Except she’s not so little anymore. And Gabe has waited a long time to act on his desires.

Gabe has starred in Mia’s fantasies more than once, ever since she was a teenager with a huge crush on her brother’s best friend. So what if Gabe’s fourteen years older?
